How to Care for and Extend the Life of Your Furniture

Good furniture is built to last — but it lasts a lot longer with a little care. A few simple habits protect your investment and keep every piece looking its best for years. Here's how to care for the materials in most homes.

Upholstery: rotate, vacuum, and blot

Rotate and flip loose cushions regularly so they wear evenly and keep their shape. Vacuum upholstery with a brush attachment every couple of weeks to keep dust and grit from breaking down the fibers. For spills, blot — never rub — and always check the manufacturer's cleaning code before using any product.

Wood: dust, condition, and protect from sun

Dust wood surfaces with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then dry them right away. Condition or polish occasionally to keep the wood from drying out. Keep wood furniture out of direct, constant sunlight, which fades and dries it over time, and use coasters and mats to guard against water rings and heat marks.

Leather: clean gently and keep it supple

Wipe leather with a soft, dry cloth regularly, and clean with a product made specifically for leather. Condition it a couple of times a year so it stays soft and doesn't crack. Like wood, leather doesn't love direct sun or heat sources.

Everyday habits that add years

Keep furniture a few inches from heating vents and radiators. Use felt pads under table legs and decor to prevent scratches. Address spills and stains right away — the longer they sit, the harder they are to remove.

Know when to call a pro

For deep stains, tears, or worn wood finishes, a professional cleaning or refinishing often costs far less than replacing the piece — and brings quality furniture back to life.

Treat your furniture well and it'll return the favor for years. A little routine care is the cheapest way to protect what you've invested.
